director

I direct work in loads of different shapes and styles, including gig-theatre, immersive experiences, circus, cabaret, burlesque, outdoor arts, performance art, autobiographical performance, theatre for young people and good old-fashioned plays.

I’m most-often devising original stuff in collaboration with other artists, but I also work with texts - new and/or published.

I’m also regularly directing R&D’s and providing dramaturgical support to artists and organisations.

Although my work varies in shape and genre, it’s always grounded in a practice of playfullness.
I’m usually trying to make things that are colouful, curious, and/or chaotic.

Gig-Theatre and Immersive Shows

I specialise in making playful performance that bursts with liveness and participation.

These range from fully immersive experiences to gig-theatre, cabaret and arty-parties.

I like to encourage audiences/participants to play and discover, giving them an opportunity to be naughty and mischievious.

My approach to creating performance like this is inspired by music festivals, escape rooms, gigs and computer games.

I want audiences to feel like they are part of the action - that their presence is acknowledged, enjoyed and essential to the storytelling.

If they didn’t want to feel involved, they would have stayed home and watched a film.

I regularly work with weird and wonderful artists who are not from traditional theatre backgrounds.

I have worked as a director with aerialists, fire-eaters/body-burners, drag artists, burlesque performers, storytellers, clowns, musicians, belly-dancers, contortionists and whip-crackers.

Plays and Studio Shows

Sometimes its hard to tell the difference between a ‘play’ and a ‘show’ and I do both of those things, often mashing them up into a big mess.

Sometimes I do make plays and studio shows, where things happen on a stage, and the audience sit at the other end of the room and watch.

When I’m making things that are closer to ‘plays’, I am usually trying to find ways to make them feel as live and playful as possible, approaching texts with the same flexibility as a devising process.

R&D and Dramaturgy

I am regularly working with artists and organisations to develop projects through Research and Development, as a Director or Dramaturg.

I specialise in supporting artists in the development of autobiographical storytelling and performance art.

I have have worked as a director on R&D’s for Stammermouth UK, Spilt Milk, CB4 Theatre, Flossy and Boo and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru in partnership with the Welsh Ballroom Community.

I work with artists and writers at various stages of development, from early creation all the way up to pre-production.

I work with people of all ages, and have repeatedly directed R&D’s for Sherman Theatre’s Intro to Playwrighting programme, developing the next generation of theatre writers in Wales.
