not just a director ok
Yeah okay, mostly I’m a director, but I also do other stuff too. Loads of other stuff.
Maybe I’m versatile, maybe I get bored easily, who knows?
Maybe it’s both, it’s definitely both.
So I’ve made this page to talk about some of the other stuff I do, so please read it if you don’t mind.
deviser/performer
I’ve devised and/or performed for outdoor arts, gig-theatre, performance art, audio drama and combinations of those things that are difficult to categorise.
I like performing in things that are high-energy and anarchic, with plenty of room to play.
I’ve worked with a number of companies to create and perform gig-theatre, game-theatre and immersive experiences, ranging from warehouse shows, digital games, and dining experiences.
I’ve performed in a variety of projects for outdoor arts companies, most recently in Rocket Launch Blaenavon for Tinshed Theatre Co., transforming the town’s historic ironworks into an intergalactic launchsite.
Companies that I have devised and/or performed for include:
Big Loop, Desperate Men, Flossy & Boo, Jeremy Linnell, Just Talk Theatre Company, Sherman Theatre, Stammermouth UK, Tinshed Theatre Co., Wye Valley River Festival, Yello Brick
I’ve devised and performed in studio shows of various genres and forms, most recently in Choo Choo! (Or Have You Ever Thought About Pushing Someone Off Of A Train Platform? (‘Cos I Have)), for Stammermouth UK. I’m also a co-writer of Choo Choo!, for which we won a 2023 Fringe First Award and the Mental Health Foundation Award from The Scotsman.
creative producer
I’ve been repeatedly funded by Arts Council of Wales, under my own name, and also for Big Loop, of which I was Artistic Director. I have lots of experience overseeing projects, from fundraising, through production, all the way to delivery.
I’m lucky enough to co-produce the Welsh division of Smut Slam, an international sex-storytelling event, that reframes commercial narratives around sex and sexuality. We regularly host Smut Slams in Cardiff, through which we have partnered and engaged with a variety of organisations, artists, and healthcare professionals whose work is centered on sexual health, sexuality and sex work. You can find out more about Smut Slam HERE.
In 2023 I was seed-funded by Media Cymru to spearhead research and development into immersive technologies and interactive experiences under the Urban Alchemy project. I worked with collaborators to investigate the use of empty and abandoned spaces in city centres, and the feasibility of rediscovering them as homes for immersive performance and digital arts.
I also produce community arts events, including: gigs, poetry & storytelling, immersive arty parties, cabaret, pretty much anything really. I can even run a game of D&D for you if you want ⚔️🥵
education/development
I’ve worked a lot with university students, sharing one-off workshops, designing and delivering modules, and bringing them into extracurricular production processes. I specialise in providing students with toolkits for: devising, working with text, and using playful approaches to create performance.
I’ve worked with a number of Youth Theatres around Wales, as a freelancer and through organisations and productions. I worked with Fio as their Youth Director, to set up and establish Fio Futures, a youth theatre focused on developing and platforming global majority young people who would otherwise not have access to artist development.
I’ve worked with Aubergine, to create arts activity with and for emerging autistic artists, including workshops, rehearsals and performance. Through work like this I’ve learned skills and methods for working with neurodivergent artists, reshaping traditional (more inaccessible) theatre-making processes.
